We are committed to an ongoing awareness of the fact that things happen, and that when they do, people may feel ways about them. We value that awareness. We are reviewing our processes. Note: This apology acknowledged an incident, expressed awareness of its effects, and committed to reviewing processes — without specifying the incident, the effects, or which processes. It was approved by legal on the first review.

Personal Apology — Professional Context

"I want to acknowledge the impact of recent interactions on our working relationship. I recognize that your experience of those interactions may have differed from my intentions. I am committed to greater attentiveness in our future communications and appreciate your ongoing professionalism. I regret any disruption to our collaboration."

Note: This apology acknowledged impact without admitting cause, recognized a difference in experience without conceding the client was right, and expressed commitment to "attentiveness" rather than any specific behavioral change. The recipient reported feeling "addressed."

Retroactive Apology — 11 Years

"I have been thinking about our conversation in 2015. I recognize now, as I perhaps should have recognized then, that the way I handled that situation reflected limitations in my perspective at the time. I regret the delay in this acknowledgment. I value what our friendship was. I hope this finds you well."
